Uptown

In the early 1900s, when the Northwestern Elevated Railroad built its terminal near Montrose and Broadway, Uptown became the northern most stop in the city, and the summer hot spot for residents escaping downtown. Its location along Lake Michigan, as well as the multitude of entertainment venues, drew people from all over, including performers like Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson. And, some of Chicago's most infamous gangsters, including Al Capone and John Dillinger helped put Uptown on the map during the Prohibition era.

After becoming more run down over the years, Uptown is slowly being restored to its former glory. In recent years, developers and home owners have taken a great interest in restoring historic homes and condominiums, while building new residences alongside. Affordable single family homes are available next to old, vintage rehabs with up-to-date interiors.

Uptown's revival isn't limited to just the housing market. The entertainment district, boasting the Aragon Ballroom, Green Mill Jazz Club (a favorite haunt of Al Capone's) and the Riviera Theater, once again draws crowds every night of the week. Argyle Street, stretching between Sheridan and Broadway, houses the city's best Cambodian, French Vietnamese, Laotian, and Vietnamese restaurants and shops. And, Broadway remains packed with various eclectic shops, restaurants, and businesses, forming the cultural heart of the neighborhood.

With its location along the lakefront, just north of Lakeview and south of Foster Avenue, Uptown has an enviable assortment of beaches and parks. Both Foster and Montrose Beach still attract beach bums looking to escape the hot Chicago sun, and Montrose Beach even has a separate dog beach, where four-legged friends romp around together. The park system spreads throughout the neighborhood, offering running trails, picnic areas, and a separate skate park.

Because of its affordable housing and growing community, young families are increasingly attracted to Uptown. Those who need to travel into the city can hop on the Brown or Purple Line trains, or ride one of themany CTA bus. Access to Lake Shore Drive is quick and simple, as well.
