Streeterville

When George Streeter’s boat ran aground just north of the Chicago River in the 1880’s, he and his wife decided to build up the land surrounding and create their own community. After a few years of dumping dirt and debris, the area was high and stable enough to settle, and Streeter decided to claim it as his territory. While Streeterville, as it became known, has since been incorporated into the city of Chicago, it still bears the name of its founder.

Today, located just a few blocks east of Michigan Avenue’s energy, yet nestled away in a tranquil area west of Lake Michigan, the neighborhood offers vibrant, upscale urban living. Because this area has avoided large-scale residential development until recently, residents are drawn to the vintage buildings or new high-rises and mid-rises, many featuring customized, modern fl oorplans, luxurious amenities, and 24-hour doormen.  Scattered town homes and two-fl ats are available, as well.

Just steps from much of the new development, the Magnifi cent Mile invites shoppers to explore national retailers and chic boutiques. Some of Chicago’s most well-known shopping is here, including Bloomingdale’s at 900 North and the Shops at Water Tower Place. And, the Hancock Building soars high above Michigan Avenue as the city’s second largest building and home to the swanky Signature Room at the 95th.

Throughout the neighborhood, upscale restaurants and casual eateries abound, from Italian hot spots Bice and Volare to local favorites West Egg and Blackie’s. Branching off Michigan Avenue, a myriad of restaurants satisfy tourists and residents alike.
