The Ravenswood Neighborhoods

Northwest of Lakeview expands Ravenswood, one of the city's first deliberately planned neighborhoods in the late 1800's. Population growth began to take off when the elevated train extended north in 1907, providing settlers easy access to the city. Today, while the boundaries vary depending on the source, Ravenswood rests just northeast of Lincoln Square, bordered by Montrose Avenue to the south and Foster Avenue to the north. To the southwest of Lincoln Square, the smaller Ravenswood Gardens neighborhood sits.

In both Ravenswood neighborhoods, an array of homes attract residences, from the vintage Victorian and Prairie School homes and brick row houses boasting wide lots, to the slightly more modern, and affordable, single family homes and multi-family units. Hard-to-come by bungalows and two-and three-flats abound. In general, home prices are lower here than in most other city neighborhoods, yet homes are generally larger, reflecting the rich architectural history of the area.

Throughout the neighborhood, tree-lined streets and beautiful gardens are in abundance. And nearby Welles Park and Winnemac Park offer several acres of wide open spaces, baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, a running track and walking trails, making it a favorite spot for friends and family to gather for a picnic or just to relax.

While mainly residential, Ravenswood shares its nightlife and dining with neighbor Lincoln Square and Andersonville.  Residents are just minutes away from the ethnic cuisine, fun nightlife, and cozy local bars and pubs. And for those who crave the city, the neighborhood has its own Metra station, as well as Brown Line stops and CTA bus routes along major streets.
