East Village Built up slightly east of the Ukrainian Village (with Damen Avenue the widely accepted dividing point), the quainter East Village mirrors the rich diversity and valuable homes found right next door. While several blocks of the area have been designated a Chicago Historic landmark, many of the older houses have been torn down or rehabbed. Now, due to its population surge in recent years, new or rehabbed two- and three-flats make up much of the neighborhood. Smaller cottages abound, as well, adding to the charm of this quiet community.
At once a pleasant retreat from the energy found just minutes away in Wicker Park, Bucktown or just west in the Ukrainian Village, East Village also offers unique neighborhood shops and restaurants. Vintage clothing stores mix with record stores, where some thorough searching yields one-of-a-kind finds. The restaurants along Ashland Avenue boast authentic Mexican tacos and burritos, Polish pierogies, and brick-oven pizzas.
For those who desire more activity, the Damen and Milwaukee intersection, and the myriad of restaurants, bars, and clubs, awaits to the north, while the Green Line is just two stops from the center of the city.
