Bridgeport is located southwest of Chicago's Loop, and is one of the most established resdential and family-oriented communities in Chicago. With access to many of Chicago's expressways, the Redline, and its proximity to downtown, Bridgeport has become one of Chicago's newly sought-after communities to live in. This is reflected in the area's rapidly rising home prices and an influx of new construction in the neighborhood.

Bridgeport is named for the fact that ships traveling on the Chicago River had to unload near one of the area's bridges because it was too low for most boats to pass cargo underneathe it.

History and tradition is ever present with many picturesque churches such as St. Mary of Perpetual Help and St. Barbara in Chicago, which tower over Bridgeport's landscape. In recent years the Art Institute has restored several historic painings in the Shrine Alters at St. Mary of Perpetual Help. These paintings date all the way back to 1890. The Art Institute also plans to restore the stained glass windows and detail the paint on the interior ceilings and dome.

Bridgeport is home to 2005 World Series Winners the Chicago White Sox and their home U.S. Cellular Field.

Five of Chicago's 45 mayor's have lived in Bridgeport, including current mayor, Richard M. Daley. Bridgeport formerly held the mayor's office for 46 years.

Many vintage homes such as bungalows and multi-units beset the densely populated Bridgeport area, but new and modern condominiums are beginning to dominate the landscape attracting young professionals and other first time home buyers to the community.
