Avondale (the Eastern portion of which is also known as West Lakeview) is a blue-collar community located six miles northwest of Chicago's Loop adjacent to the trendy Logan Square neighborhood. The neighborhood was originally home to many factories and railroads, which attracted German, Scandinavian and Polish Immigrants to its industrial quarters. The Polish community still refers to it as "Jackowo," or "the place of the hyacinth."
Although Avondale is rooted in Eastern European origins, many other ethnicities have taken root in the neighborhood, giving it a more electic feel. Great Mexican, Polish, and Asian restuarants beset the landscape of this growing and diverse community.
The housing options within Avondale are as diverse as the people with frame homes, modest brick bungalows, and two flats. With hip Logan Square to the east, modern new construction condos are beginning to trickle into the neighborhood, some with excellent price points.
Avondale is located between the north branch of the Chicago river, Diversey Avenue, Addison and Pulaski. The neighborhood is bisected by Milwaukee Avenue along the Kennedy Expressway, making it ideal for commuters.
